CANON & HISTORY: History of Belarus; Hetalia Belarus
AGE: 1030 years old; physically appears 19
CANON POINT: Modern Day
PERSONALITY:
Despite her beautiful and delicate appearance, Belarus is a terrifying and intense woman who seems to mistreat those around her as harshly as life has mistreated her. Belarus has a strong will and a strong heart, but she has lived a life of great struggle and suffering. As such her passionate heart and strong will only seem manifest themselves in negative and harmful ways. Belarus is aggressive and violent even when trying to be affectionate and as a result comes off as terrifying to those around her. Even the way she speaks is off-putting and crass. All of this has shaped Belarus into a pessimistic, unfortunate and deeply lonely individual.
When she was younger she lived with her big sister Ukraine and her big brother Russia as a family. The intense hardships they endured together had a deep impact on Belarus as a person. The youngest of the three, Belarus grew up to value family as one of the most important things to her. Ukraine was like a mother figure to her and both she and Russia were her protectors. Russia in particular embodied many of the qualities Belarus wished she had in herself. Being big and strong and powerful for her country and for her people are qualities of the utmost importance to Belarus. If she could become those things, Belarus believed that she and her people would never have to suffer and could endure anything.
Somewhere along the line this adoration of him became a twisted infatuation and Belarus became terrifyingly obsessed with her brother-- so much so that she loves him more than she loves even herself. Belarus even forgot how to speak her own language, Belarusian, preferring to speak Russian out of idolization of her brother. Initially Russia did not seem to mind Belarus' behavior and was very content to be able to live with his two siblings and other members of Eastern Europe in his own large found "family" -- the Soviet Union.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, Belarus tried to lessen her dependence on her brother. Her people and government elected to leave the Soviet Union so she tried to live as an independent entity according to their wishes. However, having never lived independently of her siblings or Eastern Europe, she ended up becoming reliant on America instead. Initially America was more than happy to take Belarus under his wing and act as a 'heroic' foil to the 'antagonistic' Russia. America found Belarus' intensity and difficult personality very hard to deal with though and eventually started to actively avoid her too.
Not sure how to live on her own after so many centuries of living under others and not able to rely on any one around her, Belarus has struggled with her independence. Belarus views herself negatively and as a disappointment to her people. She has a very depressing and pessimistic world view as a result of this and questions the purpose of her very existence as a nation. Despite being unable to see her own value, Belarus does her best to scrape by and do right by her people. She knows that because she's a poor country, it's important that she works hard when it comes to agriculture so she can at the very least keep her people fed. She has their best interests in mind at all times and loves her people dearly. Because she herself doesn't embody any of the qualities she values in a nation (strength, power, wealth) she wishes that she could just marry Russia and become a part of him again. She feels like her people would be much better off if they were a part of someone she views as a better nation than herself.
Russia, however, finds Belarus' obsession with him completely terrifying and actively avoids her. As such, Belarus is jealous of everyone that Russia shows an interest in and views them as an active threat to her happiness and well being. The two people Belarus seems to despise the most because of this are her sister Ukraine and her former housemate Lithuania.
Belarus has a complicated relationship with her sister Ukraine. Growing up Ukraine was like a mother figure to Belarus and helped take care of and raise her as a young nation. Ukraine stayed to live with Belarus under Poland and Lithuania's rule of Eastern Europe. The two were very close but as Belarus became more and more obsessed with their brother their relationship has suffered. Belarus believes that Russia loves Ukraine more than he loves her, not realizing that it's her terrifying adoration and obsession with him that makes him hesitant to be around her. She's also angry with Ukraine for what she deems 'abandoning' their family in favor of trying to make friends and allies with Western European countries. As such she treats and speaks to Ukraine harshly. That being said there is evidence that Belarus still seems to care for Ukraine deep down and is protective of her. Belarus seems to struggle to communicate those feelings in any kind of positive light, however. Ukraine openly cares deeply for Belarus and still tries to have a relationship with her. Although Belarus' behavior and dependence on Russia is something she finds deeply worrying.
Belarus' other most prominent relationship in canon is with Lithuania. After being separated from Russia for a period of time, Belarus and Ukraine came to live under Lithuania and Poland's house. At the time they were the most powerful entity in Eastern Europe. It's implied that Belarus holds mixed feelings over the time she spent living with the two of them. She finds them both bothersome, but Lithuania especially has always treated Belarus favorably. After Poland was partitioned by Russia, Lithuania and Poland's marriage fell apart. As a result Belarus and Lithuania forcibly came to live under Russia's roof together with other Eastern European nations like Ukraine, Latvia and Estonia. Lithuania grew to become Russia's favorite subordinate, which in turn made Belarus jealous of him and actively despise him.
Lithuania however, blindly adores Belarus and seems to be incapable of seeing her hostile personality or violent cruelty towards him. In canon, Lithuania is happy to just spend three minutes with Belarus on an outing with her and calls it "a date." He's smitten when Belarus agrees to hold his hand while out with her not even caring that she only did so to break all ten of his fingers to Poland's horror. She finds Lithuania's blind affection for her frustrating and irritating-- it's almost a parallel to her unreciprocated affections for Russia. However, while she despises being put on a pedestal by Lithuania, he is probably the closest thing she has to a positive relationship outside of her sister.
Belarus' personality tends to keep most people distant from her, although she occasionally meets up with the other female nations when they have get togethers in canon. Belarus seems to be a rather lonely individual and most of her interests are hobbies that she can pursue on her own like learning useless trivia and keeping a diary. She spaces out a lot, getting lost in her own head very easily. Because of the amount of time she spends thinking to herself alone she can be very philosophical. However, most of her thoughts are negative and depressing. She thinks about death a lot and often wonders about the futility of her own existence.
POWERS: As the personification of a nation, Belarus’ well being is tied directly to that of the country she represents. As long as the nation of Belarus exists, Belarus herself will continue to exist. Her health is based on things such as her economy and politics. As long as these things are healthy and functioning, Belarus will also remain physically healthy and functioning. Belarus will live longer than any human being and she will heal from physical wounds quicker. Belarus also has more impressive physical strength than an average human being. In canon she was able to put her fist through a door in Russia’s house and she was able to break all of Lithuania’s fingers with just her hands. Belarus is also skilled with weapons of all sorts, but seems to have a preference towards knives.
OTHER: Belarus is capable of seeing ghosts, has a great interest in the occult as a hobby and also has skill as a fortune teller. Because she's poor, she values focusing on her agriculture and is good at growing and cooking potatoes in particular. Belarus is also a talented acrobat and is very proud of her singing and speaking voice.
GAME INFO;
MAGIC ABILITY: Healing Communication.
Belarus would be able to heal others by communicating and talking with them. She would be able to heal wounds and injuries just through her voice. Belarus is generally terrible with expressing herself and speaks very harshly and crassly-- which will be at odds with her healing ability. Nothing says "feel better" quite like a healing, "fuck you" though. If Belarus' ability to speak was afflicted, Belarus wouldn't be able to use her ability.
PRICE: Qri can have her canon dress. It was a gift from Russia a long time ago and it's very precious. She tries to wear it as often as possible because it means so much to her.
ACCLIMATION: 4. Belarus has struggled with being an independent entity at home, but this is mostly because of her unhealthy relationship with her brother. She will have trouble being separated from him and from her people at home. She's lived a hard life for hundreds of years so she's certainly capable of survival and relying on herself. Belarus would actually benefit from being in a new environment.
